1996 – 1998 Moved to Cornwall where my great-grandparents originated from, began painting again.
Richard Hall now lives with his partner in Connor Downs where he has his studio. He spends much time on his yacht at moored at Helford on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall. His work is regularly exhibited in London, Winchester and Dorset, as well as in leading Cornish galleries.
He says of his work:
"All my senses are stimulated by what I see, influencing my feelings, thoughts and behaviour. This moves my spirit and I am inspired and motivated by the energy of this impact.
As a yachtsman, I am impacted by the ever-changing wind, sea and tide. My place in this massive dance feels very small and fragile at times. The measure of my survival at sea depends, not on how I impact on it, but how I can make meaning of the apparent chaos; how I accept it, flex to it and maintain headway to achieve my goals. In some way my process of painting is similar. I observe and paint what I have experienced. When I look at a scene that attracts me I respond viscerally and I think in terms of past input, seeing a Whistler or a Turner seascape or a Cuming beach scene, this is as much a part of my reality as what is out there. My painting reflects a synthesis of my internal and external knowing.
The paintings are primarily gouache and mixed media on paper. After the primary layers I build further layers with the use of mediums such as gum Arabic and varnish and may work over it with sometimes as many as ten layers. I work both on my boat and in my studio from sketches and photograph and from the memory of my experience, as well as what I think I saw."
