IAN LAURIE
Painter and Etcher
Ian Laurie was born in 1933. Originally working in industry, he became interested in printmaking when he and his wife, Mona, opened a gallery specialising in hand made prints by artists working in that medium.
His hobby of etching soon became sketching. Self taught, before too long he began producing his own work. His etchings gradually became known to other galleries and during the seventies and eighties his primary outlets were Liberty's and the Medici Gallery in London.
Ian moved to Cornwall in the nineteen seventies. He opened a small studio gallery in Newlyn, where he continued to produce scenic and figurative etchings but in the artistic environment in which he found himself he was soon working with brushes and palette knife to produce his view of the Cornish land and seascapes.
He held his first one man show in Penzance in 1989 and received a good review in the 'Western Morning New' which encouraged him to continue painting.
Nowadays Ian is a Member of Penzance Society of Artists and his work is to be found many private collections and in selected galleries in Cornwall.
